Well, I’ve just bought four types of pipe tobacco. I’m fairly new to this, so I figured I would try several types to find that special blend. Also to have many different flavors for different occasions, seasons, meals, etc. I have Ambrosia, Black Cherry, Mardi Gras, and the house blend called Jerry’s Choice. Jerry owns the tobacco store. Anyway, on the the point.
I’ve been able to find a technique for lighting and smoking that keeps the bowl relatively lit. However, I still have trouble with different tobaccos staying lit without having to puff constantly and the ruin the flavor. Some one suggested drying out the more moist blends. I’m open to all suggestions since I don’t know that much yet. What is the best way to dry out my blends without letting the flavor escape too much? Is there a certain amount of time? How I should lay the blend out? And I guess most importantly, what is the shelf life of dried tobacco vs. fresh?
Also, I have a rather simple but odd question. Should I store my tobacco like Jerry does? He has air tight containers. Now obviously I don’t have that much tobacco, nor do I plan to have that much. As of right now, I store it in really good ziploc bags, In an air tight box along with my cigars and humidor device. It’s a decent box that has all of my pipe cleaners and tools, my cigars, lighters, etc. It’s perfect for this.

I put this in this section because, like me, some people smoke good cigars with good liquor. And there isn’t a smoking section here.
I was thinking that would be more sensible. I didn’t try it tonight because I had a new blend I was trying out. it smoked pretty well. I’m getting better at lighting and smoking. I can hold the bowl away for more than 15 secs and still be able to puff lightly a couple times and get a good draw full of flavor.

About 3 months ago I purchased my humidor, Andorini, I took all the precautions for preparation. This morning I found a white/grey’ish substance, (mold I think), on my cigars. It is very spotty, powdery looking and the most affected was the ones closest to the humidification unit. Doing some research on the Internet I wiped down the cigars with distilled water and a paper towel, very gently, and used isopropyl alcohol on the interior of the humidor and let to air dry. I’m not sure if its mold or blume, I believe its mold because it not crystalline in nature. I don’t see any mold on the interior of my humidor, visible that is. Can my cigars be cured or saved? I’ve read you can put them in the freezer/frig after cleaning them to stop the mold from coming back, is this good idea? Help?????

Okay so I’m a huge cigar fan. I’ve been smoking cigars for 3-4 years now. When I first started smoking it was very difficult trying to explain the ‘notes’ of the cigar I was smoking, similar to when I was younger and tried to understand how one red wine tasted different from the other.

Since then my palate has matured and I can identify notes like chocolate, earthy, spice, cedar, coffee, etc. I’m still maturing my palate, but every time I light up I can identify the different flavors of a particular cigar pretty spot on compared to the reviews I read after I smoke the cigar.

So my question, how does the tobacco get the different flavors or notes? I mean I know some tobacco is sun or shade grown, and aged sometimes for years (Padron Maduro 45 10 year aged tobacco), some cigars aged in a cedar humidor. I’ve read many reviews of cigars having graham cracker notes, leather notes, and floral notes. So how does a cigar get the graham cracker notes or chocolate notes.

Thanks for the help and information guys.

We keep the air conditioner in our home set to 76 degrees. That is the temperature my household agreed upon to balance staying cool and keeping the power bill down. I have a medium sized humidor with perhaps 50 different cigars. I have a digital hydrometer that also displays temp. In the coolest part of our house the humidor hangs at a constant 77 degrees with relative humidity at 70 percent. My question is whether or not a temperature of 77 degrees will harm my cigars. By harm I mean either hindering the proper aging, or risking the emergence of the dreaded to tobacco beetle. Thus far I’ve seen no indication of a beetle infestation. I’m looking for answers from people who have experience in cigar keeping. Please do not google humidor temp, as I’ve already done that myself. I’m also well aware of the widely accepted 70/70 rule. I’m asking for opinions drawn from experience only.
